Book Review: Our Darkest Hour by Gabriella E. Mari #TheWriteReads #BlogTour

My dear bookish friends!

If you are a fan of ghost-hunting paranormal investigations type of stories (think Ghostbusters only this century plus a huge online fandom) then Our Darkest Hour is a book you should definitely check out! Please read on to find out what exactly the book is about, and to find out what I thought!

A huge thank you to TheWriteReads and the author for my ebook and spot on this tour (none of which influenced my rating in any way).

About the Book

Coming into his psychic powers by accident, Adrian Sinclair finds he has the ability to see and communicate with spirits yet zero understanding of how anything works. So when the YouTube-famous Crossroads Paranormal Research Society offers to take him under their wing, he knows he is in no position to refuse.

As Adrian learns what it means to be a paranormal investigator and how to navigate his newfound online celebrity status, he discovers that psychics are quitting en masse, and there are only vague rumors as to why…

… until something beyond his reach starts stalking him.

My Review

After a near-fatal accident Adrian Sinclair develops psychic powers and joins a high profile supernatural investigation team, which even has their own fan forum online. Despite being introverted and shy and not being able to fully control or understand his powers yet he soon becomes an indespenseable member of the team, and his own fan community is growing.

Soon enough Adrian finds himself falling for Yu, another member of the team, and romance ensues. While the first half reads a lot like a slow-burn romance, there are quite a bit of spicy intimate scenes in the latter half of the book, so if that is something you don’t like it might not be the perfect fit for you. The romance was very sweet and well done for the most part, and I found myself shipping the two as much as their fans did in the forum.

Adrian is a very intriguing character and once you learn of his traumatising past experience you immediately feel sorry for him and want to protect him, and I was glad when he found that in Yu. Now he is left with this new supernatural ability that he does not know how to handle, so the paranormal investigator team comes as a great help. Once he joins their team he is taken on some pretty spooky ghost- (and other entity-) hunting trips that had shivers running down my spine! If you are into paranormal stories, ghost-huntings and the like you will really enjoy this.

What I also really liked was the sequences from the online forum. They read a bit like text messages – you see the usernames and their comments, and I felt getting an insight into the fandom made the whole thing so much more authentic than if we had just been told what the fandom was up to.

The book is on the longer side and some might find it a bit slow but the writing is really good and the romance and threat from a particularly nasty paranormal entity are enough to keep you turning the page. It was also great seeing Adrian getting better at handling his powers.

If you are a fan of the supernatural, if you like mysteries and ghosthunter stories and don’t shy away from some spicy romance mixed into it, you will really enjoy this book! I certainly did.

4 stars from me!
