#TheWriteReads #BlogTour Book Review: Forget Me Not by Anca Antoci

My dear bookish friends,

I wish I could turn back time and go back to 2008, and give my teenage self – a huge Twilight fan –  this book. I know she would have been delighted! I also think it would have fit perfectly in that time when many books featuring vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters and co. were published. If you are a fan of these kinds of fantasies, Forget Me Not is something you won’t want to miss! Read on to find out what the book is about, and for my review!

Blurb

Deceiving the vampire that saved her could get her killed, but it’s a risk she’s willing to take.

When tragedy strikes, Rae makes a terrible choice and struggles with the aftermath. In the wilderness of the Tongass rainforest, she finds herself hunted by creatures of hell, monsters she never dreamed could be real.

A hidden world, an ancient race, and a secret she discovers by accident give a new meaning to her life but only if she can escape and return to civilization. If she is to survive, Rae must comply with Ari, her reluctant hero, and allow him to wipe away any memory of this realm. Knowledge is power, but is it worth dying for?

When push comes to shove, that’s when real strength emerges.

What would it take to discover what you’re made of?

My Review

We are thrown into the story and find out little by little about what exactly is happening together with the main character, Rae. Once I started, I didn’t want to to stop anymore. I love forests, and that’s where we spend quite some time of this story.

Rae is all alone – everyone else in her family is dead. Well, she still has her estranged aunt, but she doesn’t really know her all that well. Rae is going through a very tough time. After her sister’s funeral, she goes to Alaska to meet her aunt. What she finds is not what she expected – an empty house and a missing aunt add to Rae’s problems. No wonder she is depressed!

And then, in her grief and state of sadness, Rae ventures out into the deep, dark, dense forest in the middle of the night – without shoes and torch and proper clothing. Rae doesn’t stay alone for long. What she finds out soon is about to turn her life upside down. Vampires and other nightly creatures aren’t just characters in her beloved fantasy books – they are reality! And maybe she herself isn’t who she thought she was?

What I really loved was the way that new characters are introduced. They stay mysterious for a long time, and we wonder with Rae about who they are, why they are there, what they want from her. When they looked at her hungrily and kept licking their lips as if she was a nice steak (or carrot, for all the vegans out there!) – I loved when Rae noticed that too! Evil vampires are a treat in fantasy!

Rae herself is a great main character. She isn’t perfect, and yet, this is what makes her all the more relatable and likeable! Something I love in my reads is when the main characters undergo a good transformation, and that happens with Rae. I soon found myself rooting for her, and wanted her to have a happy ending – or at least a turn for the better.

Something else that I loved is that we are in the dark (literally!) for as long as the main character is. Trying to figure out what is going on, who is who and what they want together with Rae put me on a rollercoaster ride like no other, and I loved it!

I think what’s noticeable is that this is a debut novel. I don’t mean this in a bad way at all, but I have a feeling that with a round of editing and proofreading this book could be polished and improve even more! The pacing in the beginning is a bit slow, but once you are getting used to it and read on, it picks up as well.

Hellhounds, werewolves, vampires – fantasy fans will love this book!

4 stars from me, and I can’t wait for the next part in this series!

Thank you all so much for reading, and do let me know if you will pick up Forget Me Not!

xoxo

P.S. A big thank you to TheWriteReads and the author Anca Antoci for my review ecopy, as well as my spot on this blog tour! I’ve been meaning to read this book for so long, and am so glad I finally got around to it for this tour!

About the Author

Anca’s overactive imagination pours into her stories bringing otherworldly creatures to life. She writes about mystical creatures, mystery, and adventure with a hint of Romance.

Her debut novel, Forget Me Not, is the first part of a trilogy published in 2020.

Before starting her writing journey, Anca was active in the blogging community as a fantasy book reviewer. The fanfiction stories she wrote long before she dreamed of being a writer are still popular and available on her blog. Although not as often, she still posts book reviews and book recommendations on her blog www.summonfantasy.com.

Living in Romania, Anca speaks English as a second language and is quite self-conscious about her accent, which is why she never speaks in her videos on TikTok. She loves taking long walks through the parks to recharge her batteries before a writing sprint. She loves cooking and can often be found in the kitchen trying out a new recipe while an audiobook keeps her entertained.
